WHAT: A 6-week performance course immerses students in some of the more contemporary vocal techniques used by some of their most favorite artists. Each week during the 90 minute class, students will individually perform a song of their choice in front of their peers and receive group feedback as well as direction from vocal nerd and expert voice coach, Iari Melchor. Emphasis is on practical vocal technique that may be immediately implemented for dramatic improvement, and Iari will break down and teach the “ABCs of singing” (Amplifier shape, Breath management, vocal Cord closure) that lead to true vocal freedom and artistic expression.

WHEN: 7:00PM on Mondays. First class is March 19th and runs consecutive weeks...

Music may not have started out as a choice for Roger Anderson, but very quickly he would come to recognize it as the greatest passion of his life. The son of two musicians, Roger chose drums, in part, to be a little rebellious, and in part as a way to channel his angst. Finding a home behind the kit, he became a professional musician in high school, not seeing a need to wait, since he already knew his path. Roger was always destined to be a musician, and he now channels that early found passion into teaching as well as performing, going about life (and lessons) with a desire to inspire and to make people move and groove.

Austin Graham found his soulmate at the tender age of twelve. The crowd hushed, and as the frenzied first notes of Antonio Vivaldi’s “Double Cello Concerto in G minor” scattered out into his ears, he knew. Already three years into his violin studies, something about that piece spoke to Austin’s soul, and he was immediately inspired to pick up the cello. Some years later, Austin’s music is reminiscent of that Vivaldi piece, with emotional and complex themes, sometimes taking your brain down dark alleyways on adventures into the underworld. Claiming his inner music snob, Austin has also grown into a huge bluegrass enthusiast, and is excited and hopeful for the resurgence of a deeper artistic connection with musi...

Bass Instructor, Billy Edwards may be young, but he is not without depth. Even at the tender age of 7, though he did the traditional soccer and karate after-school activities, Billy, along with his best friend, wanted an activity that allowed them to have fun, but not feel like they were competing or being ranked. That’s when guitar, and music really came into focus. Adding the drums to his repertoire soon after, Billy began a musical and creative exploration that took him into the jazz scene at an age when a lot (most?) of kids are only interested in what's "popular." At 14, he found himself experiencing the musical possibilities the bass guitar gave him in the jazz and classical styles, and thu...

MICHAEL WHALEN -

PIANO, DRUMS, GUITAR, PERCUSSION

Introduced to music at a young age, Michael Whalen has studied piano and guitar for more than a decade. He became interested in studying music professionally, though, after hearing John Coltrane’s “A Love Supreme” in 2012.

After high school, Michael was honored to win a much coveted scholarship to the Berklee College of Music in Boston where he continued his piano and drum studies with the likes of Kenny Werner and Harold Mabern. He also had the opportunity to study vibraphone under Ed Saindon, one of the greatest virtuosos on vibes and a master technician. Michael graduated from Berklee with his degree in Performance in the Fall of 2016.

Since graduating from Ber...

Solmaaz Adeli - Voice

Equally at home on the opera stage as the soloist concert stage, American, mezzo-soprano Solmaaz Adeli has been praised for her wide range, agility and the luster of her timbre. Her voice spans three octaves, thus allowing her an expansive repertoire ranging from Baroque to 21st Century Opera.

Here at Los Gatos School of Music, Solmaaz offers private voice lessons in all styles as well as once quarterly master classes for taking things to that next level. In lessons, students will not only learn a variety of repertoire and prepare for performances and goals, but will also learn about the physiology of the voice and practice breathing techniques and stretches that are designed to prolong the...
